Travel tips
Practical background for planning a trip. Rules and prices change, so check official sources before you book.
Seasons and climate
Armenia has a continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters, especially at altitude. Yerevan can be very hot in July and August, while the high plateau around Lake Sevan stays much cooler.
May, June, September and October are generally the best months for sightseeing. In winter, snow can close mountain roads and some sites.
Getting around
Most visitors base themselves in Yerevan. Minibuses (marshrutkas) and shared taxis link the capital with many sights, and taxis or ride-hailing apps are cheap for short trips.
Roads in the south and mountains are slower than the distances suggest, so allow extra time. Hiring a driver or joining a tour is a good option for places such as Tatev.
Practical information
Entry rules, visas and land-border crossings in the region can change. Check your own government's travel advice and the official requirements well before you book, and confirm what your insurance covers.
The currency is the Armenian dram. Cards are common in Yerevan, but carry cash for villages and monasteries. Dress modestly in churches, and cover shoulders and knees where asked.
