Travel tips

Practical background for planning a trip. Rules and prices change, so check official sources before you book.

Seasons and climate

Georgia's climate varies from the humid Black Sea coast in the west to the drier east and the snowy high Caucasus. Tbilisi has hot summers and cool, sometimes frosty winters.

Late spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit. September and October bring the grape harvest in Kakheti, while the mountains are best from June to September.

Getting around

Tbilisi has a metro, buses and cheap taxis, including ride-hailing apps. Minibuses (marshrutkas) and shared taxis link the capital with most towns, and trains connect Tbilisi with the Black Sea coast.

For wine country and mountain villages, hiring a driver or joining a day tour is convenient. Mountain roads can be slow and may close in winter.

Practical information

Entry rules and visa requirements differ by nationality and can change. Check your own government's travel advice and the official requirements well before you book, and confirm what your insurance covers.

The currency is the Georgian lari. Cards are widely accepted in Tbilisi and larger towns, but carry cash for villages. In churches and monasteries, dress modestly and cover shoulders and knees where asked.
