Travel tips
Practical background for planning a trip. Rules and prices change, so check official sources before you book.
Seasons and climate
Kazakhstan has a strongly continental climate. Winters are long and very cold, especially in the north, while summers can be hot, particularly in the south and in desert areas.
Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons for travel. In the mountains near Almaty, summer is pleasant and winter brings snow and skiing.
Getting around
Distances are huge. Domestic flights and long-distance trains link the main cities, and an overnight train can save a hotel night. Within cities, buses, metro (in Almaty) and taxis or ride-hailing apps are common.
To reach canyons and lakes, hire a driver or join a tour from Almaty. Road conditions vary and some routes need a high-clearance vehicle, so ask locally.
Practical information
Entry rules and visa requirements differ by nationality and can change. Check your own government's travel advice and the official requirements well before you book, and confirm what your insurance covers.
The currency is the Kazakhstani tenge. Cards are widely used in the big cities; carry cash for villages and remote sites. In mosques and mausoleums, dress modestly. Mountain areas may have border-zone rules, so check permits locally.
