Travel tips

Practical background for planning a trip. Rules and prices change, so check official sources before you book.

Seasons and climate

Kyrgyzstan's weather depends heavily on altitude. Bishkek and the lowlands are hot in summer and cold in winter, while high pastures and lakes stay cool even in July.

June to September is the main season for hiking and yurt stays. Winter brings snow, skiing near Karakol, and closed mountain roads.

Getting around

Shared minibuses (marshrutkas) and shared taxis link Bishkek with most towns, and are cheap but can be crowded. Within cities, taxis and ride-hailing apps are common.

To reach high lakes and remote valleys, hire a 4x4 with a driver or book through a local camp or community tourism network. Mountain roads are rough and can close in bad weather.

Practical information

Entry rules and visa requirements differ by nationality and can change. Check your own government's travel advice and the official requirements well before you book, and confirm what your insurance covers, especially for trekking and altitude.

The currency is the Kyrgyz som. Cards work in Bishkek and larger towns; carry cash elsewhere. Mobile coverage can be patchy in the mountains. Dress modestly in villages and mosques, and respect local customs when staying in a yurt.
