Travel tips

Practical background for planning a trip. Rules and prices change, so check official sources before you book.

Seasons and climate

Romania has a continental climate, with hot summers and cold, snowy winters. The Carpathians stay cool even in July, and the Black Sea coast and Danube Delta are warm from May to September.

Late spring and early autumn are the best times for sightseeing. Summer suits the delta and mountain roads such as the Transfăgărășan, which is closed by snow for much of the year, and winter brings Christmas markets and skiing.

Getting around

Bucharest has a metro, trams and buses, and trains link the capital with Brașov, Sighișoara and other cities, though they can be slow. Buses and minibuses reach smaller towns.

For castles, mountain roads, the painted monasteries and the delta, a hired car or an organised tour is the easiest way. Roads outside the main routes can be narrow and slow, so allow extra time.

Practical information

Romania is a member of the European Union, and entry rules, visas and border checks can change. Check your own government’s travel advice and the official requirements well before you book, and confirm what your insurance covers.

The currency is the Romanian leu. Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for villages. In churches and monasteries, dress modestly, with covered shoulders and knees, and ask before photographing inside.
